A WOMAN WITH A VOICE IS A STRONG WOMAN
Westlands Constituency Grassroots Women Groups participated in a two day capacity building workshop at Highridge Secondary School on Thursday, July 16 and Friday, July 17, 2015. The Westlands Women Empowerment Forum was sponsored by Westlands MP Hon Tim Wanyonyi. The forum whose theme was ‘A woman with a Voice is a strong woman’ attracted two thousand four hundred women. The Chief Guest at the workshop’s final day was H.E. Rachel Ruto, the National Patron of the Joyful Women Organization (JOYWO).
The workshop targeted participants from all the five County Assembly Wards within Westlands Constituency namely Kangemi, Mountain View, Kitisuru, Karura and Parklands Highridge Ward. Each ward mobilized approximately five hundred participants mainly drawn from existing Joyful Women Organization Groups as well as from groups intending to join the JOYWO structure.
The Westlands Women Empowerment Forum’s main objective was to help promote the full involvement of women in every aspect of socio-economic growth and development in Westlands Constituency. The topics delivered at the workshop session were aimed at imparting entrepreneurial skills to grassroots women, promoting economic empowerment among women and minimizing social barriers that affect productivity and participation of women in sustainable livelihood activities.
Topics presented at the workshop were Investment Strategies for Investment groups, Turning Passion into Profit, Sources of Funding at Constituency Level, as well as Cleanliness and Public Health. The participants also got a chance to hear a real life experience motivational speech from Mrs Anyango Ogutu.
On Friday, July 17, 2015, participants were trained on proper Baby Nutrition, Effects of Drugs and Substance Abuse to families, Proper Health and ways of reducing non-communicable diseases, Social Welfare Savings and Micro-Insurance plans as well as Risk Reduction and Preventive Measures of HIV Infections.
Table banking presentation was also delivered for new groups that were interested in joining the programme. The presentation also served as a refresher training session for the existing groups.
The Chief Guest of Honour termed the Westlands Table Banking project as an important stage in the journey to women empowerment in Westlands Constituency. She thanked all the JOYWO group members who have been actively participating in the programme activities.
She added that JOYWO envisions a society where women are fully empowered to supporting their families. She also urged the groups under the Westlands Chapter to take full advantages of the opportunities available in the Organization.
H.E Rachel Ruto promised to journey with the Westlands JOYWO Chapter to ensure full socio- economic empowerment of women. She thanked the MP for supporting the programme since its inception. She promised to initiate training on public procurement for women to enable them take full advantage of the Government procurement opportunities.
All workshop participants were awarded certificates of participation after the workshop.
