WESTLANDS GRASSROOTS WOMEN TABLE BANKING GROUPS MARK ONE YEAR
The Westlands Grassroots Women Table Banking Groups under the Joyful Women Organization Westlands Chapter marked their one year anniversary celebrations on Friday, July 17, 2015 at Highridge Secondary School. The ceremony, hosted by Westlands MP, Hon Tim Wanyonyi was attended by two thousand four hundred women from Westlands Constituency. The anniversary celebrations was graced by Her Excellency Rachel Ruto, the National Patron of the Joyful Women Organization. Leaders who addressed the participants were the Nairobi Governor H.E Dr Evans Kidero, Dagoretti North MP Hon Simba Arati, Langata MP Hon Joash Olum and Embakasi North MP Hon John Ogutu Omondi.
Prior to the anniversary celebrations, the Westlands Women Grassroots Table Banking Groups were sponsored to a capacity building training on Thursday, July 16, 2015. The women were trained on various thematic topics aimed at promoting the full involvement of women in every aspect of socio-economic growth and development in Westlands Cosntituency.
Guest Members of Parliament lauded the Westlands MP for initiating and maintaining a successful programme that promoted the full empowerment of women in the constituency. They pledged to adapt the table banking project in their respective constituencies to help empower grassroots women socially and economically.
The Nairobi Governor Dr Evans Kidero in his speech pledged to assist the Westlands MP Hon Tim Wanyonyi’s efforts in promoting and supporting projects geared towards women empowerment. He also promised to support each registered table banking group by donating KES 100,000 towards the groups’ savings.
Hon Wanyonyi thanked the Joyful Women Organization (JOYWO) for empowering women through the table banking programme. He said the project has changed the lives of grassroots women in Westlands Constituency. The Westlands MP said the women empowerment programme under JOWYO has been a great poverty eradication tool especially among women in the informal settlements. The table banking project was initiated in Westlands by the MP Hon Tim Wanyonyi.
The Chief Guest, H. E Rachel Ruto termed the Westlands Table Banking project as an important stage in the journey to women empowerment in Westlands Constituency. She thanked all the JOYWO group members who have been actively participating in the programme activities.
She added that JOYWO envisions a society where women are fully empowered to supporting their families. She also urged the groups under the Westlands Chapter to take full advantages of the opportunities available in the Organization.
H.E Rachel Ruto promised to journey with the Westlands JOYWO Chapter to ensure full socio- economic empowerment of women. She thanked the MP for supporting the programme since its inception. She promised to initiate training on public procurement for women to enable them take full advantage of the Government procurement opportunities.
Hon Tim Wanyonyi awarded the first three groups KES 150,000, 100,000 and 50,000 respectively for their exemplary performance in Table Banking. The gourps awarded were Upendo Women Group, Victory Women Group and Kangemi Widows Women Group respectively.
