Westlands Constituency grassroots women groups registered under the Joyful Women Organization were hosted to an economic empowerment forum by Westlands MP Hon Tim Wanyonyi. The forum took place on Saturday, June 6, 2015 at Highridge Secondary School. The women, from sixty one registered table banking groups met to discuss issues pertaining to the project which was initiated and sponsored by the Westlands MP.

Group leaders drawn from the five Wards made remarks regarding the project, which they said has changed their lives. Ms Christine Mwigina Agonya from Karura Ward lauded the MP’s support towards the project. She recounted how the groups’ collective and individual contributions have grown in the past one year. Her words were echoed by Mrs Susan Moraa from Kitisuru Ward who said the programme is first of its kind in Westlands. She gave account of a chicken raring project she has started from capital borrowed from her table banking group.

Ms Betty Hamood, who made key remarks said saving and borrowing from the table banking groups has boosted business and in turn improved lives of many households in Westlands Constituency. She said the groups have broken tribal barriers as well as improved economic empowerment among grassroots women. Ms Hamood also stressed the need for capacity building in entrepreneurship, community development, peace building as well as civic education for the women.

Hon Tim Wanyonyi through his representation lauded the women for actively participating in the table banking project. The Westlands MP promised to have the project’s one year anniversary commemoration in July. He also pledged to initiate a two day capacity building session for the women groups prior to the anniversary celebrations.

The Westlands women groups table banking project was initiated by Hon Tim Wanyonyi in June 2014. He sponsored sixty one women groups to the programme that is run under the Joyful Women Organization. The Westlands Constituency groups will mark the one year anniversary in July 2015. The ceremony will be graced by Her Excellency Rachel Ruto.
