The Westlands Constituency Newspapers in Education (NiE) primary schools project was launched on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at Highridge Secondary School.

Hon Tim Wanyonyi, the Westlands Member of Parliament (MP) who is sponsoring the programme presided over the launch.

The initiative is in partnership with Nation Media Group (NMG) who will provide reading resources, volunteers and publicity for various activities.

Each of the 18 public primary schools in the constituency will benefit from the initiative.

The main purpose of the program is to improve reading, spelling and writing abilities. In addition, it will help teachers to use the newspapers in meeting their curriculum objectives in the classroom.

Some of the activities to be implemented include reading clubs, spelling bees, sports days and debate competitions that will run throughout the year.

Speaking during the event, the MP called upon the teachers to utilize the program to effectively develop critical thinking among pupils.

“Back in our day’s newspapers played a pivotal role in cultivating a reading culture, improving literacy and developing critical thinking,” he said.

The project was co-facilitated by Ms Carol Mani, the Nation Media Group Newspapers in Education (NiE) Coordinator.
