Westlands Association hosted a consultative stakeholders’ breakfast meeting with Nairobi Governor Dr. Evans Kidero on Wednesday October 14, 2015 at Pride Inn Hotel. The breakfast meeting was attended by the Westlands MP, Hon Tim Wanyonyi, Parklands Ward MCA, Hon Jaffer Kassam and Westlands Sub County Deputy Commissioner, Ms. Flora Mworoa among other leaders.

The Deputy Sub County Commissioner, Ms. Flora Mworoa highlighted key security concerns in Westlands Sub County. She appealed to the County Government to install sufficient street lights especially in informal settlements to improve security within the areas.

Westlands MP Hon Tim Wanyonyi appreciated the Governor’s audience in the forum. In his remarks, Hon Tim Wanyonyi asked the Nairobi Governor to build Westlands as a Model City within a City. The MP called to attention the contribution of Westlands Constituency to the G.D.P of the County owing to it hosting the biggest business and international organizations in the country.

Among the other issues raised by the MP were the proposal that upon completion of the Westlands Market, traders be moved from the roadside in order to open up the roads within the Westlands Business District. He blamed the current traffic congestion experienced in most roads within Westlands as a result of old estate roads currently operating as commercial roads. On the of land grabbing menace, MP suggested to have the controversial wetland on Peponi Road converted into a recreational park as a way of protecting it from potential land grabbers. 

Hon Tim Wanyonyi also emphasized to the county the need to create sustainable boda boda regulations that will control the growing industry so that the sector does not fall into the wrong image of crime. Lastly, the MP pledged to support the Governor in his development initiatives within Westlands Constituency and Nairobi County.

Long Awaited Kangemi Market to Be Constructed in 3 Months

Nairobi Governor Dr Evans Kidero said Westlands contributes a significant 60 per cent to the Nairobi County G.D.P. He said owing to this contribution, Westlands needs to be given prominence in funds allocation to carter for planning and physical development. The Governor also pointed out the need to address urban poverty which he said constitutes 70 per cent of the Nairobi County Population. H. E Dr Evans Kidero pledged to have the Westlands Market completed as soon as possible. He said the World Bank has disbursed 1. 6 Billion to construct Kangemi Market. According to the Governor, the construction will commence in less than three months.

The Institute for Social Accountability National Coordinator Ms Wanjiru Gikonyo outlined the Association’s role in creating positive by promoting public participation in governance. She said sensitization of the public on budget and funds allocation increases accountability of both county and government officials. Responding to the concern over security, Mr Mwaura, suggested a two pronged approach; nyumba kumi and village council models. This, he said had been adopted at national policy level. “If everyone was involved in own affairs and that of his/her neighbor, all issues of security, environmental conservation and even meter reading would be done more effectively,” he concluded.

Parklands MCA Hon Jaffer  Kassam lauded the County Government’s performance in the two and half years and hoped the tempo would accelerate in the coming years. He singled out Hon. Wanyonyi for making Westlands Constituency schools ICT compliant

The Governor was accompanied by the County Executive Committee Members of Housing, Lands and Physical Planning, Finance, ICT, Trade and Industrialization and Public Service Management. Ward Administrators from Kangemi, Mountain View and Parklands also attended the forum.
